Years ago, furniture was made to last a lifetime, or more. Unfortunately, fine finishes were not; they spotted and discolored easily. A harmless glass of water, unprotected, could cause that disasterous, irremoveable Three meals a day provide ample opportunity for spills and messes, particularly for a growing family. Napkins across the lap not only protected clothing and wiped faces, but were readily available for quick clean-ups.
As the woman of the house added her individual touches of lace and embroidery to her table linens, they became decorative as well as practical. Hours of skilled needlework would transform a plain tablecloth or set of napkins into a work of art, frequently one-of-a-kind.
In today's world of sturdy polyurethane, table linens are chosen for their decorative appeal. We appreciate the time and workmanship that went into an antique, handmade piece. Originally, the custom of providing monogrammed napkins was probably for identification. Monogrammed napkins have become classic.
Passed from generation to generation, monogrammed linens are now valued for their workmanship and artistry. It's nice to find at least your own last initial, but many people today choose more for the look than the letter. Embroidery evolved into an art form, with elaborate monograms, crests and curly-ques. Society silk tablecloths, toppers and doilies, as ever, are displayed as the best of the best.
