About Table Linens Years ago, furniture was made to last a lifetime, or more. Unfortunately, fine finishes were not; they spotted and discolored easily. A harmless glass of water, unprotected, could cause that disasterous, irremoveable white ring! A tablecloth, placemats set or coasters would either protect the finish and/or hide unsightly damage.Three meals a day provide ample opportunity for spills and messes, particularly for a growing family. Napkins across the lap not only protected clothing and wiped faces, but were readily available for quick clean-ups. As the woman of the house added her individual touches of lace and embroidery to her table linens, they became decorative as well as practical. Hours of skilled needlework would transform a plain tablecloth or set of napkins into a work of art, frequently one-of-a-kind. In today's world of sturdy polyurethane, table linens are chosen for their decorative appeal. We appreciate the time and workmanship that went into an antique, handmade piece. Originally, the custom of providing monogrammed napkins was probably for identification. Monogrammed napkins have become classic. Passed from generation to generation, monogrammed linens are now valued for their workmanship and artistry. It's nice to find at least your own last initial, but many people today choose more for the look than the letter. Embroidery evolved into an art form, with elaborate monograms, crests and curly-ques. Society silk tablecloths, toppers and doilies, as ever, are displayed as the best of the best. Many of our vintage table linens come from Connecticut estates. We always look for handmade pieces; our special favorites include figural lace and society silk embroidery. Old or new, each has been chosen for that certain something that makes it special, usually handwork of some kind. Enjoy browsing through our table linens section. Whether you choose antique, vintage or handmade linens, that certain something will add charm to dining area. | |||
