About Table Runners & Dresser Scarves

Table linens, including a wonderful variety of table runners and dresser scarves, were the thrifty housewives' answer to a peculiar problem. Years ago, furniture was made to last a lifetime, or more. Unfortunately, fine finishes were not; they spotted and discolored easily. A harmless glass of water, unprotected, could cause that disasterous, irremoveable white ring! A dresser scarf or table runner could protect the finish and/or hide unsightly damage. Table runners and dresser scarves topped bedroom, vanity and dining room furniture. As the woman of the house added handmade lace to the dresser scarf or embroidery to the table runner, it became decorative as well as practical. Hours of skilled needlework would transform a plain table runner into a work of art, frequently one-of-a-kind. In today's world of sturdy polyurethane, table runners and dresser scarves are chosen for their decorative appeal. We appreciate the time and workmanship that went into an antique, handmade piece. Many of our vintage table runners and dresser scarves are found at Connecticut estates. Each was chosen for that "certain something" that makes it special.
