29" by 42", this towel combines the subtle texture of fine white linen with hand finishing.Lengthwise edges are selvege; both ends are scalloped and finished with closely-worked buttonhole stitching.
An 8 1/2" by 17" design spreads across the front. A pair of smiling cherubs show-off a bowl of flowers. Scrolls, curling floral vines etc. embellish the scene.
Several lacemaking techniques created the design. Bold cutwork outlines scrolls and bowl; buttonhole stitching finishes edges and connectors. Drawnwork lace texturizes open areas. Selected threads are removed from the fabric; remaining threads are pulled together into open-squares and honeycomb patterns. Tiny open-eyelet flower-centers add another lacy touch.
Crisp buttonhole stitch outlining and padded satin stitch add a three-dimensional effect.
This towel is clean and in excellent, never-used condition; brand new.
