ABOUT HANKIES
But, not so many years ago hankies were a part of every lady's life. A scented hanky in purse or pocket was an essential part of her ensemble. The fashion conscious chose her hanky-of-the-day to complement her costume and the occasion----tailored or dressy and color-co-ordinated. A whole wardrobe of hankies developed. Hankies were not only a fashion accessory, but a part of society and courting customs. A dropped hanky was a time-honored introduction invitation. The heirloom wedding hankie became part of the bride's ensemble. In some circles, the depth and shade of lace on a widow's hanky indicated her stage in the mourning period (and thus her possible availability for a new relationship). Etiquette required careful choice and use of hankies. In our grandmother's time, idle hands were frowned upon. Sewing with friends was socially acceptable. Hankies were an easily portable project. Irish linen squares, known as hanky blanks, fit easily into the sewing basket and young girls practiced their lace-making and embroidery skills in the art of hanky making. This page shows you a varied sampling of hankies. Specific hanky styles; floral print, Irish linen, monogrammed, wedding or novelty hankies may be found in the site map at the top.
