The edges are finished with a single row of pulled hemstitching, criss-crossing at the corners. Double rows of drawnwork outline the center. Selected threads are removed from the fabric to create an openwork stripe. Remaining threads are pulled together into a zig-zagging pattern.

These squares are not perfect. One has a pulled thread on the edge of one cross pattern (probably two clever stitches would repair it). Another, (left) has several small holes worn in the fabric.
